Il primo passo indispensabile per superare delle paure è riconoscerle. Chi soffre di panico ha paura senza sapere bene di cosa. Spesso l'oggetto della paura viene identificato nelle specifiche circostanze che la evocano (spazi aperti, spazi chiusi, gallerie, supermercati, lontananza da casa, auto, traffico, autostrada, etc.), ma in realtà la paura del panico è tipicamente ricorsiva, cioè si ha paura di avere il panico! Si tratta del noto circolo vizioso del panico altrimenti detto "paura della paura".
A livelli più profondi questa paura viene agganciata da pensieri catastrofici (paura di morire, di avere un grave malore, di svenire, di essere lasciati soli e senza soccorso, o dalla paura di perdere il controllo e di impazzire). E può venire esacerbata dal timore di mostrare agli altri il proprio malessere, esponendo la propria debolezza, fragilità, o incapacità. E' pertanto indispensabile individuare con precisione le proprie paure, per imparare a gestirle in modo nuovo e più sano.
Anche se vengono individuate le proprie paure, l'idea di andare in panico è talmente terrorizzante da scoraggiare molte persone a proseguire un percorso personale. E' pertanto indispensabile apprendere a calmarsi. Ma calmarsi non vuol dire soltanto apprendere delle tecniche di rilassamento. Spesso alcune terapie sono inefficaci in quanto non tengono conto del fatto che lo stato di allarme o di panico non ha nulla a che fare con la tranquillità di uno studio in cui si apprendono delle tecniche per rilassarsi. Apprendere a calmarsi implica la capacità di orientare la propria attenzione in modo netto e completo su sensazioni di sicurezza e la capacità di riconoscere e uscire dall'immaginazione catastrofica. Questa parte del programma è fondamentale per uscire dal problema.
Accade frequentemente che chi soffre di questo problema modifichi in modo significativo il proprio stile di vita, ridimensionando il proprio spazio di azione e la propria libertà. Il passo ultimo e decisivo per superare il problema consiste nel riprendere in mano la propria vita, senza rinunciare a ciò che è importante negli affetti, nelle relazioni, nel lavoro e negli interessi personali.
