Panico e Disturbo di Panico
Si fa spesso molta confusione tra i termini "panico" e "Disturbo di Panico".
Il panico è una condizione di intensa ansia con manifestazioni fisiche variabili da persona a persona (tachicardia, tensione muscolare, tremori, pressione toracica, sensazione di fame d'aria, etc.) che può insorgere nelle più svariate circostanze. Si ritiene che nella popolazione mondiale una persona su tre abbia avuto nel corso della propria vita almeno un attacco di panico anche in situazioni che non rappresentano un pericolo reale (ad esempio nel traffico, sotto una galleria, nella folla, in aereo, in situazioni di esposizione personale come un esame, parlando in pubblico, etc.).
Uno o più episodi di attacchi di panico non rappresentano necessariamente un problema psicopatologico.
Il Disturbo di Panico è molto meno frequente (una persona su 120 circa) ed è caratterizzato dall'intenso timore di avere nuovi attacchi di panico con conseguente comportamento di evitamento o ricerca di accompagnatori e/o rassicurazioni di ogni genere (vicinanza di ospedali, medici, persone di riferimento). Si può dunque soffrire di Disturbo di Panico anche in assenza di episodi di panico in quanto il problema non consiste negli episodi di panico in se stessi, ma nel temerli fortemente con conseguente cambiamento del proprio stile di vita.
Purtroppo però, molte persone che soffrono di Disturbo di Panico sono convinte che il loro disturbo consista nell'avere episodi di panico. Ciò è vero solo in parte in quanto l'aspetto più importante del disturbo consiste nel temere di averli. Ed infatti le strategie terapeutiche efficaci si focalizzano sulla riduzione della paura di avere nuovi attacchi. A sua volta la riduzione del timore di avere nuovi attacchi di panico comporta l'effettiva riduzione di intensità degli attacchi con ulteriore riduzione del timore di averne in un circolo virtuoso che porta alla rinuncia all'evitamento, cioè ad affrontare le situazioni precedentemente temute.
